Addressing Chlorine Damage for Your Hair

With warmer temperatures, chances are that you’re hitting the pools regularly. Our team believes that there’s no better way to relax than a quick dip in a refreshing pool. Plus, it’s an excellent way to beat the heat and keep yourself cool.

Unfortunately, frequent swimming can damage your locks. If you notice that your hair is dry and frizzy, or if your ends feel like straw, you need to take action now. Here are a few ways our team recommends repairing chlorine-damaged hair.

  1. Clarify
If your hair has suffered chlorine damage, there’s a good chance that build up in your hair is exacerbating the issue. We recommend using a clarifying shampoo to specifically address this issue. You can create a DIY clarifier for use at home consisting of baking soda or apple cider vinegar and water. Apply this formula and allow to sit for approximately 15 minutes before washing out and completing your shower with a high-quality conditioner.

  2. Scalp Health
When you frequent pools, the chemicals and metals present can disrupt your hair’s natural oil production. To reverse this issue, you’ll need to remove any dead skin cells that reduce oil production then replenish moisture levels to return your scalp to optimal health conditions.

  3. Use Protein Treatments
Single use protein masks are excellent ways to deliver that much needed boost to tired summer hair. In the height of swim season, we recommend applying a mask at least twice a month.

  4. Deep Condition
Aside from your normal conditioner, include a bi-weekly deep conditioning treatment on the off weeks of your protein treatment. This can help restore moisture and smooth any frizzy, damaged hair resulting from summer sun and chlorine exposure.
